Job Description

Yellow Wood Academy, currently located in Mercer Island, WA, is hiring a Head of School to begin July 1, 2025, to take over from our current Executive Director, Jed Miley. The school has evolved significantly from a tutoring center to a school in its 30 years, and the top leadership position continues to evolve along with it. The Head of School at Yellow Wood oversees the school's ongoing operations, hires and supports its employees, manages its annual budget, and keeps an eye on the future through strategic planning and visioning. Initial annual base compensation will include benefits and a salary between $190,000 and $250,000. First and foremost, successful candidates must embrace Yellow Wood's mission and values, including demonstrated commitment to special education. The four primary areas of responsibility for the role include Educational Program Management, Board Relations, Operations and Financial Oversight, and Community Engagement. Yellow Wood's next leader has an exciting opportunity to continue to refine a vision for how the school can support as many students as possible, move to a new location that is 25% larger and more purpose-built, and lay an exciting foundation to ensure the sustainability of the school going forward. Search Calendar:
- August: Twelve-year employee and six-year Executive Director Jed Miley announces his departure at the end of the 24-25 school year.
- September: Board of Trustees begins planning a transition process.
- October: Faculty, Staff, Student, and Parent/Guardian engagement "Town Halls" and feedback gathering.
- November: Opportunity Statement and Job Description posted to Yellow Wood's "Next Chapter" website. Applications due 11/30.
- December: Review applications and interview semi-finalist candidates.
- January: Finalist interviews occur on YWA campus to meet with all constituents.
- January 31: New HOS appointment announced.
- February: Continue the work of transition from Jed to Yellow Wood's new leader.
- July 1: New HOS officially begins.
