Position Summary
The Director of Athletics and Co-Curricular Activities is a full-time member of the faculty, reporting directly to the Associate Head of School. The Director will also work closely with other members of community leadership, serving as a member of the Head of School Advisory Team. This position is responsible for the oversight and counsel of all areas of community life as they relate to the School's athletics and co-curricular programs. The position also includes one season of afternoon co-curriculars and regular evening and weekend responsibilities.
Working closely with other members of the Athletics Department, the head coaches of Hill's 32 interscholastic teams, and the directors of the School's co-curricular offerings, the Director of Athletics and Co-Curricular Activities will be responsible for developing and implementing policies, practices, and protocols that allow students to pursue excellence in their areas of passion. This person will direct the co-curricular program, which includes athletic and non-athletic options, to create meaningful opportunities for students to discover and develop their interests and prepare to pursue lives of purpose in college, their careers, and most especially, throughout their lives.
The Director of Athletics and Co-Curricular Activities will ensure that The Hill School's athletics program provides student-athletes with the appropriate opportunities to compete at the highest level of independent school sports, compete with character, practice teamwork, and establish healthy lifelong habits.
Responsibilities:
Athletics Administration
Supervise the Athletics Department, including individual oversight and all collaborative efforts
Oversee School policies pertaining to co-curricular and athletics programs, including any revisions to the athletics section of the Student Handbook
Strategize and manage the Athletics Department's budget
Schedule teams and support for the assigned programs for which you serve as the administrator
Organize, communicate, and execute athletics facilities projects
Build and maintain partnerships with vendors who provide streaming services, apparel, equipment, etc.
Coaches & Staffing
Be responsible for the evaluation of all staff in the co-curricular program
Assign all faculty to co-curricular roles - program directors, coaches, and game managers
Organize and facilitate professional development opportunities for head coaches, including an annual retreat
Oversee new faculty coaches' training
Hire and set stipends for non-faculty coaches
Student-Athletes
Oversee, organize, and support attendance for all co-curricular programs
Coordinate with the College Counseling Office and head coaches to create effective strategies and support systems for aspiring collegiate student-athletes
Manage the student-athlete leadership program with the Director of Leadership
Oversee end-of-season and annual awards
Work with head coaches to select annual athletics awards
Community
Interface with all constituencies to ensure positive, appropriate, and inclusive interactions
Assist head coaches in establishing and enforcing healthy relationships and boundaries between parents, coaches, and student-athletes
Be responsible for developing and enforcing the School's fan code of conduct
Partner with external-facing offices (Admission, Communications, Institutional Giving) on the pursuit of shared goals
Represent the School's athletics and co-curricular programs to its Board of Trustees
Committees & Groups:
Lead the Athletics Advisory Team and head varsity coaches
Assist with the implementation of residential programs, especially as they pertain to athletics and co-curricular programs
Serve as a member of the Head of School Advisory Team, Executive Committee, Hiring Committee, Calendar Committee, Hall of Fame Committee, Prize Committee, and several other standing and ad hoc committees
Oversee and manage the coverage duty team for the Athletics Center
Represent Hill in all league and state associations (MAPL, PAISAA, NEPSAC, TNPHL)
Qualifications:
A candidate will ideally have at least 10 years of athletics administrative and/or coaching experience in an educational setting, preferably residential. This person will be expected to undertake responsibilities that are importantly associated with a boarding school, such as leading and serving on various committees and contributing to the school's co-curricular and residential programs. A bachelor's degree is required; a master's degree is preferred. The start date for this position is July 1, 2025.
