Lick-Wilmerding High School (LWHS), a coeducational, independent school with a rich legacy in San Francisco, California, seeks a strategic, thoughtful, and highly relational leader to serve as its Dean of Equity, Inclusion & Belonging. Founded in 1895 as a free technical school with a progressive vision, today LWHS proudly upholds its commitment to being a "private school with a public purpose." With a vibrant community of students passionate about academics and social justice, LWHS empowers young people to develop the knowledge, skills, and perspectives needed to engage meaningfully with the world.
Reporting to the Head of School, Raj Mundra, the Dean will serve as a thought partner and strategic collaborator to the Head, Senior Leadership Team, and Board of Trustees. This role presents an opportunity to strengthen and elevate LWHS's approach to equity, inclusion, and belonging during a time of transition and growth. The Dean will advance LWHS's educational mission by helping to create humanizing spaces where individuals are recognized, affirmed, and supported across all their intersectional identities. Through collaboration in curriculum development, leadership in professional development, and activation in community engagement, the Dean will help foster a learning environment where differences are valued as assets and everyone can show up as their whole selves and participate authentically in curricular and extracurricular community life.
As a key partner in shaping the culture of the school, the Dean of Equity, Inclusion & Belonging will support and propel Lick’s commitment to interrupting bias and discrimination, with a particular focus on addressing racism as a systemic force. With a strong awareness of the current and historic challenges of diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and belonging (DEIJB) in education, the Dean will be able to recognize and navigate community power differences with the goal of providing appropriate support to historically marginalized individuals and groups while also encouraging the introspection and informed action of others towards collective goals. At the same time, the Dean will encourage the bridging of differences– helping to build common ground across identities and experiences and cultivating a community where empathy, connection, and collective responsibility take root. The successful candidate will bring energy, passion, and new vision to the work, guiding a community of adults and students who are already aware, active, and eager to participate. A seasoned leader in the field of DEIJB, the Dean will bring a nuanced point of view to the role, creating an approach that is simultaneously proactive and responsive.
